What is the fastest growing cedar tree?
There are many different kinds of cedar trees, which is the best kind to build a hedge with?
The short answer is ...... Green giant cedars! Well, there is no one type of cedar that is best, but green giant cedars are very good. They are very fast growing, have a beautiful deep green colour, are hardy for the most part and tolerate tough growing conditions. They can put on 3-4 feet per year in ideal growing conditions.
There are a few other contenders that also provide privacy :
- White cedars : Don't grow quite as quickly and vigorously as green giant cedars but are very hardy. Once established they can put on 2-3 feet of growth per year. They have a little bit lighter foliage hence the name white cedar (although they are nowhere close to looking white) Pruning required to make a thick, dense hedge. If left unattended, these trees can grow up to 40 feet tall.
- Black cedars: Very similar to white cedars with a slightly darker foliage (hence the name, black cedars) Very hardy and tolerant of growing conditions. Slower growing but once established can also put on 2-3 feet per year.
- Emerald cedars: Beautiful specimen cedar trees with deep, rich green foliage. Very slow growing and somewhat temperamental. Prefer well draining soil, cannot tolerate standing water. Grow about 1 foot per year in ideal conditions. Low maintenance required.
These are just a few of our favourites and is by no means a comprehensive list. Contact Niagara Tree company to see what type of cedar tree is the most suitable for your soil type, growing conditions and landscape needs.
